Chanel Flap Bag History
The history of Chanel flap bags goes back to February 1955, when Coco Chanel launched what would become one of the most recognized handbags of all time – the double flap complete with a mademoiselle metal chain and closure. The idea of the double chain was to allow hands-free use of the bag, a cutting-edge innovation at the time, and allow the bag to be slung over ones shoulder or carried in the crook of the arm.
This bag became popularly known as the 2.55 flap design, due to the date it was launched (February 1955). Throughout the years numerous variations of the original 2.55 design have appeared such as single flap vs double flap, various sizes, and the use of leather interwoven through the chain. However, one of the most important variations came in the 1980s when Lagerfeld added the famous interlocking CC locks to the classic flap.
Chanel Classic Flap Vs Chanel Reissue Flap
The terminology used to describe Chanel flap bags can at times be confusing. First of all, the Classic Flap is used to refer to bags which feature the interlocking CC locks which debuted in the 1980s thanks to the design by Karl Lagerfeld. The 2.55 is used to refer specifically to Coco Chanel’s original design that was launched in 1955 with the mademoiselle metal chain and closure. However, it is common for 2.55 to be used as a phrase that encompasses all Chanel flap bags that use the traditional structure.
Reissue Flap, on the other hand, is a term used to describe a 2005 version of the 2.55 which was reintroduced by Karl Lagerfeld as a recreation of the original to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original release. However, once again it is common for Reissue Flap to be used to describe all recently made 2.55s, although it technically should only refer to bags made after 2005.
Distinction between a Double Flap and Single Flap
There is an important distinction between double and single flap Chanel bags. Traditionally, both Classic Flap and 2.55 bags are double flaps, meaning they both feature an exterior flap closure and an interior flap compartment. 2.55 bags have never varied from this design, however, on occasion the Classic Flap bags have been made in sizes which can only accommodate the exterior flap closure with an open interior. However, single flap bags were discontinued in 2014
